Letters

Last week Mr. Wright and I were asked to write letters to our son at school. In return, he would write us back. Yesterday I opened his backpack and found his return letters.

Dear Dad,

I love you. I always belong to you. When it’s quiet you are my friend because you know me. You are one of my favorite things. Good things are about to begin because you are my friend.

Love,

Matthew

Okay, for a handicapped kid that struggles every single day to communicate and express himself, I was in awe.

Like, tears streaming down my face, can’t wait to hug my sweet boy awe.

I was so excited to open the letter he wrote to me!

Here’s what it said:

Dear Mom,

It’s great to meet you. Summer Splash will be open at Seven Peaks Water Park on May 25th, 2012. I want to go.

From,

Matthew

What the what?

As if he sensed my future disappointment, he scribbled a small notation on the bottom.

Next year I will be in seventh grade.

As if I didn’t know.

As if I didn’t arrange the whole thing by meeting with multiple teachers and therapists to make sure he not only was accepted into seventh grade, but will excel there as well.

It’s all right.

I can take it.

I don’t mind being the person he seeks out for material things.

Which he most definitely will not be getting.

Anywho, so you don’t miss the girls, here’s a shot of them playing at Utah Lake last weekend.

Matthew was hiding under a beach towel playing his iPod.

Probably texting love notations to his father.

And drawing pictures of them playing together.

Pff. Whatever.

  • I feel your pain. Thanks for the chuckle!

Well, you know where to send him when he wants something. If Dad’s his favorite, then Dad it is.

BTW, his letter was amazing (um, yours, too). And I feel you! Stinkin’ kids!

Nice to know I’m not the only one this happens too! :)

  • ok this one hit home for me. My 9 y.o. who gets more time with tutors and shadows than she does with mainstream teachers brings home ellaborate colorful works of art for Daddy to hang in his office, which happens to be our den. I work outside the house running our business everyday, and I do get weekly letters. In angry red marker, left when she tries to run away. ….. It’s ok. I pick her up from the corner everytime and hug her til it’s all better. But I’m holding on to those letters!!!

  • Both of his letters made me cry. I love imagining his sweet voice saying each word. I am just wondering if you ought to see what the letter was like that Mr Wright wrote… was it one of those letters where you push a little button, and it plays a recording, like a recording of the angry birds soundtrack perhaps?
